Learning Log:

  • Mental Health: Main thing to remember here is: We know that we don’t know. Sure, you can have a appendicitis, a broken bone, a nosebleed….we all know what is wrong with the person. Insane in the brain? Person is weird. Noone knows what goes on in our heads. This subject is still a bit airy-fairy. I may have to dedicate a posting entirely about Mental Health.
  • Communications in Nursing: We have a great lecturer, she is also our tutor. To put it in the words of Primus, she’ll “talk the balls off a rhinoceros”. Nice and friednly manner, and just talktalktalk…If you would be a patient and had her as your nurse, you wouldn’t mind any kind of needles, she’d focus you on something completely different just by talking and engagin you in conversation. If thats not a skill that could be of some kind of use in the back of an ambulance…
There are a few drawbacks, it is after all a nursing unit, and some things, like talking to a patient for veeeery long periods of time (months) or assessing a patient over a period of time, is just not our job. I guess it’s still handy to know, though.
  • Human Structure: Ah, a core unit! Anatomy and Physiology basics. Started of with the important macromolecules, which would be Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Nucleic Acids. I bonked that in to my head last Thursday, my head hurt after that. Again, I will dedicate a post to this.
  • Cultural Studies: Hmm. We are supposed to be taught about respecting different cultures, how to see our own culture, where we come from, and that there are differences. Wow, no kidding?! I am not the centre of the universe?
OK, I am being facetious. This unit is intended for the kiddywinks young adults that just emerged from high school and went straight to uni; and probably were born in Perth, never left Perth, and never got any other insight.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking down at them, they didn’t have a choice. And they probably had a great life, growing up at some of the best beaches and having great weather and an easy going lifestyle. So I am going to apply for ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’, or RPL for short. Might get out of it, that would be sweet :)
  • More studies later, got to prepare for tomorrows horror-uni day (0830-1530 with one hour break…).

On a lighter note, I bought my 4th bike last week: it is a Flying Pigeon. Enjoy!Flying Pigeon
